Shobdon Church
Firmingers were appointed in 2009 to assist in preparing a major grant application for a programme of repairs to the chancel, north and south transepts and associated stone replacement. We have been retained to act as quantity surveyors for the project.
Shobdon Church is a grade 1 listed building and has been recognised by the World Monuments Fund in its 2010 “at risk” register.
The interior is of international significance being a unique combination of Rocco and Gothic, often called “Strawberry Hill Gothick”
Decay to wall plates is making the structure unstable and placing the interior at risk. The proposed works will have to be undertaken without disturbing the internal fabric.
We have provided estimates and assisted in the preparation of a grant application which resulted in the award of significant funding from English Heritage towards the £1m cost of repairs. We also assisted the Parochial Church Council in the appointment process for an architect.
Bills of Quantities have been prepared and sent out to tender.
The project received the largest ever grant awarded by English Heritage under the Listed Places of Historic Worship Scheme.
